Dr Sujit Brahmochary
Founder and Director, Institute for Indian Mother and Child
From a young age, Dr Sujit Brahmochary felt a strong calling to help the poor.
He was from a rural village in Bangladesh, and his dream to become a doctor seemed almost impossible.
His strong determination meant that he did achieve his goal.
Completing medicine in Kolkata and winning a Red Cross scholarship to study paediatrics in Belgium, Dr Sujit could have then chosen a life and career in Europe.
Instead he returned to rural West Bengal armed with a doctors bag, a vision and a belief that people could come together to make a true difference.
He would not accept that families should continue to suffer for generations just because of the situation they were born into.
Chosen by St Mother Teresa as Medical Director of her mission in Kolkata, Dr Sujit developed his passion. After working with her for a few years and with her blessing, he then founded an NGO , 'Institute for Indian Mother and Child' (IIMC) in 1991. He had a desire to not just provide charity, but to empower the poor to help themselves. Meeting his wife, Barnali, a gifted teacher and similarly dedicated humanitarian, the couple were armed with skills in both health and education.
Through his work in developing health centres, schools and by building an enormous volunteer work force of local people, Dr Sujit is a person who has made an impact on hundreds of thousands of people who were among the ‘poorest of the poor’. International volunteers come from across the world to work alongside his local team and to learn about how to deliver these essential services. Dr Sujit has a growth mindset that is phenomenal, continuously looking for new ways to expand the project's services, not only to reach more isolated communities but also to cover all determinants of health including shelter, safety, and financial independence.

IIMC and Australia- building a partnership

Dr Cherie and Dr Sujit in Perth, 2022

Meeting with the 2022 volunteers
Dr Cherie Graziotti founded IIMC Australia inc in 2004, after returning from volunteering at IIMC as a medical student with IFMSA Italy in 2003. During that trip she had met and sponsored 5yr old Sangita, a first generation learner who had been awaiting sponsorship. Sangita's parents were eager for Sangita to have the opportunity to have an education.
IIMC Australia was established as a non profit association aiming to enable other Australians to sponsor children through IIMC. After 2 years raising awareness Cherie returned to IIMC at the end of 2006 and spent 2 further months volunteering, including conducting home visit health checks on the 26 sponsor children who had then been supported by Australians, and developed a deeper understanding of IIMC as an organisation.
Cherie continued to promote IIMC and educational sponsorship in Australia and completed her first years of medical practice in WA. Sponsorship numbers gradually grew to over 200. More Australians began to visit IIMC and contribute time, energy and funds (see below for some amazing examples). Cherie worked with Dr Sujit to structure a health education project for medical students and in 2009 she returned to IIMC a third time, now with a group of Australian medical students and her brother Jack, a primary teacher, and over another 5 weeks they delivered a pilot Australian group volunteering and health education project. The team raised money for IIMC to purchase their first ultrasound machine. Dr Sujit also began visiting Australia every 2-3 years to motivate medical students and share his passion.
He has visited in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022.
Following the success of the medical student program, after sending another 2 groups of medical students from Australia, Cherie was able to integrate the volunteering programme with the Interhealth group at UWA to formalise the annual exchange. The volunteering program has grown as medical schools in Australia increased. The 16th group will attend at the end of 2025 and each group of students now selects and mentors the following years' volunteers. Each group has worked hard to fundraise towards a project as part of their preparation, and outcomes have included wheelchairs, a rooftop playground, sanitary product delivery, school renovations, and more.
With dedication to her education, Sangita completed her IIMC schooling in 2019 and went on to complete a BA at university in Kolkata.
In 2021 IIMC was accepted as a Rotary Australia, World Community Service project enabling Australian donations to be tax deductible.

Australian funded schools
Three IIMC schools have been independently funded by Australian donors, outside of the sponsorship program.

General donations
In Australia we also receive some once-off or recurring general donations towards the project's work, also outside of formal child sponsorship or another specified goal.
People making these contributions often include returned volunteers or professional people who have visited IIMC, or have a personal or professional affiliation with India.
We are extremely grateful to all those who make contributions.
We know who you are, and we thank you!
