From a young age, Dr Sujit Brahmochary felt a strong calling to help the poor.  He was from a rural village in Bangladesh, and his dream to become a doctor seemed almost impossible.

His strong determination meant that he did achieve his goal.

Completing medicine in Kolkata and winning a Red Cross scholarship to study paediatrics in Belgium, Dr Sujit could have then chosen a life and career in Europe.

Instead he returned to West Bengal armed with a doctors bag, a vision and a belief that people could come together to make a true difference. He would not accept that families should continue to suffer for generations just because of the situation they were born into.

Chosen by St Mother Teresa as Medical Director of her mission in Kolkata in 1988, Dr Sujit developed his passion. After working with her for a few years and with her blessing, he then founded the NGO , 'Institute for Indian Mother and Child' (IIMC) in 1989. He had a desire to not just provide charity,  but to empower the poor to help themselves. Meeting his wife, Barnali, a gifted teacher and similarly dedicated humanitarian, the couple were armed with skills in both health and education.

Dr Sujit is a person who has made an impact on hundreds of thousands of people who were among the ‘poorest of the poor’. International volunteers come from across the world to work alongside his local team and to learn about how to deliver these essential services. Dr Sujit has a growth mindset that is phenomenal, continuously looking for new ways to expand the project's services, not only to reach more isolated communities but also to cover all determinants of health including shelter, safety, and financial independence.
