Based in West Bengal, India, The Institute for Indian Mother and Child (IIMC) is a grassroots nonprofit organisation founded in 1989 by Dr Sujit Brahmochary.
IIMC was established to empower women and children living in poverty and to create lasting pathways out of poverty. IIMC’s strength lies in its integrated community development model combining healthcare, education, and women’s social and economic empowerment.
IIMC is supported by donors and volunteers from all over the world including Australia. All donations made in Australia are tax deductible.

Founded in 1989, IIMC is a non governmental organisation committed to advancing social justice and strengthening vulnerable communities. Today, IIMC positively impacts more than 100,000 people each year through a diverse range of programs. Since its foundation, hundreds of thousands of families have benefited both directly and indirectly from its sustained community focused initiatives.
IIMC was established by Dr Sujit Brahmochary, a trained paediatrician who was serving as Medical Advisor to Mother Teresa at the Missionaries of Charity at the time. Motivated by a deep commitment to equity and compassion, Dr Brahmochary shared his vision of founding IIMC with Mother Teresa. She encouraged him to work in remote areas, serving mothers and children who had little or no access to medical care.
While working closely with communities experiencing poverty, Dr Brahmochary quickly recognised that limited access to healthcare was only part of the challenge. Widespread malnutrition, driven by the shortage and inadequate consumption of nutritious food, was a critical and deeply rooted issue. In response, IIMC adopted a holistic approach, addressing not only immediate health concerns but also the underlying social and economic factors affecting women, children and communities more widely.
Today, IIMC’s comprehensive support framework includes education, social care, primary healthcare education, microcredit initiatives, housing and sanitation support, nutrition and antenatal programs, and dedicated women empowerment initiatives, all working together to create sustainable and lasting change.
